Terrifying Future Weapon-Black Dog
AlphaDog ( Legged Squad Support System) operates by using a mix of GPS and computer vision, some clever on-board computers, and state of the art hydraulics. Those barbell weights you see on its flanks weigh 400 pounds (180kg), and the monstrous mutt has enough juice to walk 20 miles (32km) over a 24 hour period without refueling. AlphaDog can handle inclines of up to 35 degrees (very steep), and apparently it can walk through freezing water too.
DARPA and the US Marine Corps are testing AlphaDog in the field. Needless to say, with soldiers having to carry up to 70 pounds on their backs, and clambering over rough ground that conventional vehicles can’t reach, a robotic pack mule could make a real difference in battle.
